Henry turned 8 years old on February 24th and he was baptized on March 8th, 2014. Since there was no snow this year on his Birthday, we had a Lego Movie Birthday party with a bunch of his friends and cousins on his actual Birthday. We saw it 3D and I smuggled in snack baggies and water bottles for all the kids. I was so worried someone was going to ask what was in my giant 50 lb purse. I don't think a boy could have been more happy. The move was really great and the kids all had a great time. When we got home, we had pizza and ice cream cake. Justin put all 5 pizzas in the same oven to cook, which any logical person would know wouldn't work, so we all had to eat snacks, and dessert before the pizzas were even out of the oven. lol. Henry got a lot of Legos from his friends and since I fixed his Lego table, all of them are nicely displayed on it.
On March 8th Henry was baptized. It was such a wonderful weekend full of family and friends. All of Henry's grandparents came to the event as well as his best friend cousin, Wee-o, Stefanie and baby Nathan. On Friday we woke up insanely early to take some photos and then spent the day at the Museum of Natural History where they also had a chocolate exhibit. We got in trouble shoving chocolate down our kids' throats throughout the museum. lol.
Friday night we had the Hohls and Tingeys over to read the last chapter of the Book of Mormon together. The spirit was very strong and Henry says he has a little testimony(and he thinks the 3 Nephites helped him find his wallet). Saturday morning I spent most of my time cooking and hanging out with the family. Then at 3:30 he was baptized. 12 non Mormon friends showed up and a ton of family. The spirit was very strong there. We were so blessed that he had so much support from all his family.
Both of his grandparents, Burnell Hohl and Jim Tingey gave the talks, I sang What Heaven Sees in You changed to boy lyrics and Justin baptized him. During the baptism, Vivi was climbing up the glass yelling, "Hi Daddy!" over and over. Afterward everyone came back to eat and hang out at our house. Then on Sunday we celebrated his Birthday along with Gammie, and other family. It was an awesome weekend.
We skipped school on Monday and spent the day at the Leonardo museum with the Chous and Bradshaws, ate at Hires, went on a short hike up City Creek Canyon and then went to the Lego movie again. If you don't already know, you have to see it twice.
In January I take Henry out of school so we can ski and learn more info in a shorter amount of time, but it's insane and I'm already exhausted from our ski day yesterday. Today we did our big school day including a science experiment. Henry dissolved salt, sugar and flour in water and dropped an egg in each one. The egg floated in the salt water! I told him about buoyancy in the ocean and even the Great Salt Lake and he's excited to go out there to do the experiment with his own body. He got so much done today...so tomorrow we ski again! We plan to ski three to four days a week if our kids don't stage a coup.

Henry, I just have to tell you how much I am appreciating you right now. At the beginning of this year, you had some emotional troubles and would fight with me every time I mentioned any of your home work or piano practicing but you've turned a corner and are doing so well. I attribute some of it to the winter time and you not knowing that it's actually early when you go to bed. You are finally waking up early and are getting some things done in the morning.
You are committed to reading the Book of Mormon before your baptism in about four months, even though you've neglected it for a while. Every morning you wake up and read two chapters, mark it off on your sticker chart and then go downstairs and practice your piano. I haven't even had to ask you to do it for a few weeks and it's changed our entire relationship! I'm so grateful that you've decided to do it without asking(or nagging and eventually getting frustrated). You do so well in school and I appreciate all your hard work to get good scores. You do your homework without many problems and do well on all your tests. You got a 90% on your last Chinese test and your teacher told me that you cried with your head down on your desk. I was so sad to hear that you didn't think you did well, but I'm so glad you care so much about doing well in school. I just love everything about you and I hope you can continue to be so responsible. It really makes a big difference in our home. Henry, you are a machine! What do you make? Energy! For the first two weeks of summer I have had you in an hour of tennis, and hour of swimming lessons, playing at parks or our back yard and then two hours of basketball camp along with activities at home and you're still not tired at bed time! We take you on bike rides and hikes and you tirelessly play family and house with your sisters. I have never seen you act tired!

Well, I am excited to say that you are getting really great at tennis and you are also a great little swimmer. I wanted to put you on swim team...but I don't want to bring you to practice at 7:30am and dedicate every Saturday to swim meets. All the girls are still asleep that early anyway. Maybe next year. Anyway, life is so fun during the summer. This next week we're having our family reunion and then visits from friends. After that you have Chinese camp and then lego camp. You don't even know I signed you up for that. You're going to die of excitement!

Anyway, I love you dear boy. You're so much fun to have around and you're such a wonderful big brother. Thanks for playing family and house and parents and babies with Bea all the time. You even let Vivi hit you in the head with a wooden stick toy over and over today and still gave her a hug to make up.
You really are the best. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6111514268138816537.post-91746805443225300712013-04-10T07:21:00.000-07:002013-04-10T07:21:14.959-07:00Rediculously Late 7th Birthday Post
Oh Enrico... You asked me the other day why I haven't read you your Birthday blog post and my heart dropped to my stomach. It has been at the top of my list for a month and a half, but I have just been trying to survive with all my projects on the farm and elsewhere. I know you're too young to know just how busy a person could be because for you there is endless time, but life is seriously out of control right now, but it's all good stuff, so nothing to worry about. I really love writing your Birthday post because it gives me a chance to remember all the wonderful things about you...
Henry...I really cannot believe that you've been a part of this world for 7 years now. People told me the time you have kids flies by and now I'm experiencing it first hand. Just thinking about doubling your age and you're a teenager and will soon be going on a mission makes me miss you already. As a seven year old, you couldn't be more wonderful. I told you a while back that many of the moms I knew said their little boys didn't want to hug and kiss their moms anymore after they turned seven because they didn't have a need for such fluff anymore and you remembered that and just the other night you said, "mom, I still love to hug and kiss you and I'll never stop wanting too". You still can't fall asleep unless I sing to you because you got so used to it when you were little, which can be a problem because there's just so many kids to sing to sleep these days! I do love singing you to sleep though and I will never get tired of singing to you.
Henry, this year has been an adventure. You started going to a new school, Lone Peak Elementary, where you are in a Chinese immersion program and spend three hours per day learning Chinese. After a semester of 1 1/2 hours of homework given by the English teacher every night, I felt inspired to take you out of the English half of the day and do home school for that half day. Well, what we do is more like unschool/ski school but I have felt such peace with my decision because at night we can just focus on being together as a family, eating delicious gourmet meals that you help me prepare and I never have to yell at you from the kitchen to finish your homework while I'm frantically trying to cook dinner. You went skiing over 25 days this year and are getting really good. I pick you up from school at 11:45 and we head up to ski two to four days a week(once we skied 5 days in one week!) You and Bea amaze me as you bomb down the hill together. Clementine has even come with us a few times. Your ski school teachers at the Canyons said you were one of the best 6 year olds they have seen in a long time. After skiing we go to the hot pool and hot tubs at the Waldorf and play until it's night time and they bring out the s'mores and I have to drag you away to head home and we finally get you to bed. You really love ski season!
When you're not skiing you're pretend playing with your sisters. Henry, one great thing about home schooling is that you've developed a good friendship with your sisters. You adore Violette above all, you and Clementine get along great and you and Bea can have your moments of fighting, but you two spend so much time playing family and planning picnics together and I hear a ton of laughing while you're playing together. You and Bea and Clementine are always being silly and enjoy making each other laugh. I really hope you all stay really close and always see each other as peers and playmates.
Henry, you also love to read. You and I are reading the Fablehaven series together at night and during the day you frequently have a book in your hands you're reading. Your favorite books are the Geronimo Stilton series, which you can read in one or two days. You're also reading the entire Roald Dahl collection from Costco that you got for Christmas and are already halfway done. You've been tested at a 5th grade reading level and tested gifted in everything else (however Utah sets the bar rather low, so I'm not sure what that really means). I'm so grateful that you have such a keen mind and absorb information so easily. I'm really glad you're in the Chinese program because you're actually learning something new and you really love it. We love your teacher, Mrs. Bringhurst, and she says you're one of the only kids in the class who can read Chinese sentences and answer questions in Chinese even without even having her read them out loud and can answer complex questions correctly. You usually get 100% on every test and when you don't (and get a 92%), you come home so disappointed and say you don't want to talk about what happened at school. Just know, we're not pressuring you to be perfect!
This year you're excited because you're reading the Book of Mormon through before your 8th Birthday so you can have a testimony of the gospel before you get baptized. You have a love of the gospel and the scriptures and your knowledge of the scriptures stories and the doctrine is growing day by day. We study the scriptures together every day at breakfast and even though you and your sisters wiggle and giggle, you somehow hear everything I am saying and can answer any question I ask. You talk about gaining your testimony frequently and we hope you sincerely pray to feel the spirit tell you that the scriptures and the gospel are true.
This year we have welcomed many pets and farm animals to our family including 30 chickens, 3 turkeys(one eaten), a few random barn cats, many fish(all dead), two hairless rats, many jars of insects and just recently, a lizard. You are strangely scared of touching the rats because you think they have diseases. I don't blame you because you're born a New Yorker and a fear of rats comes with the territory. You love being outside on the farm, collecting eggs, finding bugs, jumping on the trampoline, and creating your fun little world on our farm.
Henry is pretty much lucky that I'm his mom because I am doing some pretty crazy and fun things with him this year. I'm so grateful not to be pregnant at this point in time so I'm taking advantage of it and doing some amazing things like homeschooling him half day so we can do things like ski three days a week, actually go to a museum and actually do some science, which I've not heard anything about since he started school so I assume they've done no science. Shame. He actually reads books at his level, has time to practice piano, study Chinese, READ SCRIPTURES and actually PLAY! I remember a talk at General Conference by one of the Apostles that said that Children don't have enough unstructured play time. I'm trying to follow that advice and let him play Legos on his new Lego table I made him for Christmas for at least 1 hour per day. Plus, Justin and I play games like Monopoly, Life, Ticket to Ride and Bohnanza with him. Some of those say you have to be 13 to play, but he's doing great! One thing he could improve on is not waking up at the crack of dawn to say goodbye to Justin before he leaves for work. He wakes up super early after staying up kind of late since we read a book together every night after we play games and sometimes gets cranky. Check out this photo of him taking a nap on the chairs at the ski lodge at the Canyons. He's so tired he just fell asleep on the chairs and missed an hour of good ski time. What a bum! He's an awesome little skier and he and Bea are taking lessons for the next 5 weeks. The kids are so incredible here. He's really not even amongst the really great ones. On his first day, they called him a "wedger" and sent him down a level. He got mad and is now motivated to never do the wedge again.

Henry is so much fun right now and Justin and I are living it up and enjoying every minute of our time with him. I just love you my darling boy!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6111514268138816537.post-10105337458205059912012-11-12T11:42:00.000-08:002012-11-12T11:42:09.105-08:00Innapropriate church behavior

Henry couldn't resist climbing in the giant bank of snow next to our car at church and fell in up to his waist. He was having a blast until he felt the holly bush underneath poking holes in his legs. Every morning Henry goes to an hour of tennis lessons, an hour of swimming lessons(which is mainly just lap swimming and I'm surprised with how well he puts up with it) and then swims at the pool for a couple hours afterward, and never wants to go home, he reads a book a day, has playdates every once in a while, and has soccer twice a week. He's one busy kid! You'd be surprised how often he complains that he's bored. Seriously. What more do I have to do? He's had family and friends staying here almost the entire summer and got to visit his cousins in CT for his aunt Courtney's wedding reception and family reunion. He basically just ran wild with his cousins and I'm glad he's still alive.

Yesterday was the last day of Kindergarten. I'm so excited to have my schedule back to how it was before this school year. I know I signed him up for Chinese immersion school, but I'm kind of dreading the mundane every day schedule that comes with putting your kids in school. I used to go on a road trip every month without a care in the world and I miss it. I heard that Chinese school has a lot of homework. I think it's going to be a good thing that I'm homeschooling him for half the day and that he's already ahead in reading and writing so we can just focus on learning Chinese for the first difficult months without it taking up all his time at home. He keeps asking me when we're going to Italy and I keep telling him that it's just the first day of summer vacation and he will have to wait two months before we leave. We're heading out to CT and NYC for a week in a couple of weeks where he will see his cousins. He'll be so excited!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6111514268138816537.post-68822513046811703322012-05-02T22:39:00.003-07:002012-05-02T22:39:48.108-07:00Super late Easter recap

Since St. Patrick's was on a Saturday and Justin, the principal instigator of crazy Saturdays filled with activities, was out of town, I had to come up with my own. After the classic green milk that the kids wouldn't drink and downing a few Chocolate coins left by the Leprechauns, (actually from the giant box of left over Christmas candy that doesn't exist) we...
The kids also ate Lucky Charms all day long, which I have NEVER bought for them. You can guess how long those lasted. After all the fun, we drove down to Provo to eat dinner with my mom and swim in the indoor pool and hot tub. The kids had a blast swimming. We finally got home at 9pm and threw the kids into bed. Phew! What a fun day.
Henry and I finished putting the rodent skeleton together that we took
out of the owl pellet we got from the museum of Natural History. It is
huge. My dad thinks it's a squirrel. I think it looks like a rat.
We'll probably never know. Dissecting an owl pellet was one of my few
memories of Elementary School that I look back on with fondness so I
wanted to recreate the experience with Henry. He really loved gluing
the bones back together today to see the finished product. And guess
why we now have time for such fun activities? Chore chart!
Tonight for Family Home Evening we went around telling each other what we loved/liked about one another. Henry told me that he loved me because I go skiing with him and because I made a chore chart for him! I couldn't have anticipated the effect this amazing little chart and system would have on my son. He truly loves it and it works better than I could have imagined. I got the idea from the parenting class I'm taking. If you can take one of these classes, do it. Don't be ashamed. You don't have to be out of control to finally take a class.

These are our poker chips. The Black are 10 points, the blue are 5, the red and green are both 1point each.

The whole idea behind this is this: Kids tend to feel entitled. They have high expectations for being able to watch the shows they want to watch, play video games, eat special treats, have play dates, get McDonalds whenever mom is running late, and that's just the little kids. Fast forward a few years and some kids all have laptop computers, ipods, ipads, bikes, scooters, endless designer clothes and activities galore. And as one of my wealthy neighbors put it, "What do you get kids who have everything"(Talking about Christmas) Do they work for these amazing privileges? I can tell you that most do not. I didn't grow up with opulence, but I hardly worked at all for what I did have. Justin, on the other hand, worked a lot and it paid off big time. If my kids are going to grow up on a farm, they need to be able to work hard!

I bought him a little safe box to keep his chips in. He loves locking and unlocking it to put his chips in

This is a system that is kind of like Chuck-E-Cheese for ages 4 and up. Your kids do a
chore, they get a chip right away. They earn enough points, they get to
spend their points on things they want to do. They save up some of
their points for bigger weekly prizes and an even bigger monthly
prize. All of these things, except for new LEGOS which require insane amounts of chores to get, are things I allow my son to have anyway, but now he's just working for them. I don't even have to remind him most days to get his chores done. He just does them and he's going strong for 2 weeks now. And in his words as he clutches his chips, "This is so much fun!!" In the chore column he has to do the first set of chores to be able to use any points. He has the option to do more chores down below for more points and then there are the bedtime points at the bottom which he only gets if he does them without me asking him after I make the initial announcement that we're getting ready for bed. The things that are hard for him to do or remember are worth more points. Combing his hair is really hard, but he'll do it for 5 points! Also, he is required to use his points for one daily and weekly prize. He can't just save them up and not do anything fun all day long. The last thing is that you have to give your kids chips for having a good attitude and you just have to do it at random without any set point value each time. This way it inspires them to always do everything with a smile on their face just in case they earn an extra few points.

This chart makes Henry Happy

Since this began, I have almost stopped having to parent Henry. He's doing it all by himself. He loves this system and so do I. We've become even better friends and now that he's basically cleaning my whole house, we have more time to do fun stuff together and mom doesn't sit around all day long cleaning up messes and nagging him to get his chores done! If any of you are having trouble getting your kids to do their chores, this is a great system that doesn't use candy, bribes, real money, and won't cost you a penny if you don't want it to. If you want the official instructions I will scan them and email them to you. Let me know if it works for you!

After skiing we headed out to my Mom's place in Provo for a delicious dinner with swimming and hot tubbing afterward. We finally arrived home around 9pm, I fell asleep around 11pm and didn't wake up until 10am the next day. I was exhausted! We certainly play hard in this family!
I feel like I can't waste one moment inside. Result: messy house, dirty kids, too much planned and extra tired mom and kids.
Here is our Friday in photos
Then it was off to the park I grew up going to, Lindsay Gardens. Henry climbed trees, rolled down the steep hills, and just played and played. It was fun to be back.
Excuse me as I brag for a moment about Henry. Since this is his life journal I have to record this for posterity. Justin and I just went to parent teacher conference and we found out that Henry is pretty much a genius! He's reading at a 3rd grade level! I thought maybe he was approaching a 2nd grade level with his reading, but he's apparently way past that! He's also off the charts with everything else from math to science and the penguin that he drew was the most life like looking one of the whole class! He is polite and helps the other children with their reading. He is kind to all the kids and he participates well in all activities. I have to say that I feel really good about trying to home school him next year. Even if I crash and burn, he will still be ahead of his class, AND doing what I've been doing to get him to this point of excellence was really fun and easy for me. I enjoy teaching him and he is a little sponge and listens to everything I say. I'm really looking forward to it:)

Still working on that smile. lol! This was way better than the shot with the strawberry.

The two things he needs to work on are being quiet while his teacher, Mrs. Genesi, is talking. He has a tendency to talk to his neighbor, talk to himself, and make clicking noises with the back of his throat. I don't blame him for making clicking noises because I remember being young and trying to figure out just how many sounds I could make. It's so fun when you're a kid!

When my mom went in to my Kindergarten parent teacher conference, she said my teacher, Mrs. Barriger, who was also my brother's friends' mom, and said, "there's a big problem". My mom sat there with her heart pounding in her chest, wondering what could be so wrong. Finally she took a deep breath and sighed, "Annie just uses way too much glue". Hahaha! My mom was like, "um, that's not really a big problem". I do remember pouring glue all over my hand, letting it dry and then carefully trying to peel it off so I had a life-sized glue hand with all it's lines and prints. What's more fun than that? It took a lot of patience and intricate peeling to get that thing off, skills that I appreciate to this day. I frequently have to carefully peel stickers off of church pews, kitchen chairs, the floor without ripping them with a tearful Bea peaking over my shoulder. I also need all the patience training I can get. I am debating about even teaching Henry how to do it. And don't try to even tell me that every single one of you didn't rub glue all over your hands at one point in your childhood. Yesterday Henry and Bea got in a little fight and to apologize Henry decided to get on PBSkids.org and print Bea out a photo of Valarie Velociraptor from her favorite show, Dinosaur Train, then he drew a picture of herself with a crown on, colored everything, cut it out, taped it together, wrapped it all up in a construction paper bow(that doubled as two bracelets) with a heart on top. He brought it up to her and she opened it up with a huge smile on her face, saying that she loved it. She put her bracelets on and we pinned it to her cork board in her room. He has turned into the most thoughtful little guy and I'm so proud of him!
My favorite day is the day after our house cleaners come because the house is perfect, no one has to waste time in the morning cleaning up their rooms, putting toys away, doing dishes, which slowly eats up our time, especially when you're trying to be a good mom and make your kids take care of their own stuff and not do it all yourself.
Yesterday we played Henry's new game he got for his Birthday, Number Ninjas, made a giant snowman outside and ate giant strawberries before school even started. We had so much fun! I was just thinking that when I home school him next year for half the day, I'm going to have to just put all the cleaning aside and just play and do school and I need to be ok with the house not being perfect sometimes.
This morning I woke up and Henry and Bea had already gotten themselves breakfast and were all dressed in their snow clothes and playing outside in the snow. I told Henry that if we have an awesome snow day next year I would take him up the mountain and we would do school on the ski lift, memorizing addition and subtraction problems, Chinese characters and practicing spelling. I figure with all the time that is wasted during the regular public school day, why not use that precious time to go skiing! He got so excited when I told him that idea. I wish they had a home school ski program. I would totally go for that!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6111514268138816537.post-48627383825106714502012-02-26T23:48:00.000-08:002012-02-26T23:48:39.546-08:00Happy 6th Birthday Henry

Dear Henry,
Henry, you have an exceptional zeal for life and have so many talents. You enjoy everything you do and you're always active in accomplishing so many worth while things. The things you enjoy most are, building with Legos, especially Ninjago Legos, riding your bike, playing Little Big Planet(sparingly), writing elaborate stories and illustrating them for hours on end and reading your own stories and reading with me. We have read the first two Harry Potter books together as well as Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and are now working on The Wind in the Willows. We love reading stories and then watching the movies afterward. One thing you have been doing a lot lately is skiing! You just finished a 5 week long ski school at Snowbird and you really improved. Last week we went skiing together, just you and me, and you knew exactly where everything was on the mountain, knew what the lifts' names were and where they would take us. You also forced me to take the transport bus up to the main lodge just so we could buy candy and hang out, which is also a huge reason you like skiing since that's what we did to bribe you to go when you were younger and crankier:) Now you love it and won't hesitate to go. You are also a great swimmer, even though we haven't been going regularly. You are totally comfortable in the water and can swim across any pool. I hope you can join a swim team this summer!
You are such a great big brother. Bea ruins your Legos, takes your stuff, kicks and hits you and you usually turn the other cheek and come to me for help. I really appreciate that you are so kind and that you aren't a fighter. You LOVE your sisters and you made me throw away a tee-shirt that said, "Sister For Sale" because people would ask you which one was for sale, which you did not like because you love all of your sisters, even Bea. You love Violette the best. You ask to hold her often and you pay a lot of attention to her. You kiss and hug her all the time and love to make her laugh. You also play a lot with Clementine and you enjoy hearing her talk gibberish around the house and you laugh a lot at what she says. When Clementine does say something coherent, you marvel and say, "She's the smartest baby in the world!".
You have become such an obedient boy these past 6 months. I remember when we first moved and I needed you to do your chores and you threw tantrums for hours when you only had 10 minutes of cleaning up to do, but now you help me anytime I ask. You keep your room clean and organized and have never shoved everything under the bed. You get dressed, attempt to comb your hair, brush your teeth and put your pajamas on without having to ask you twice and you are usually ready for reading and songs way before I'm even ready to read with you, which is a miracle! After we read together, which sometimes lasts an hour, I sing your favorite song, "It's just the thought of you" which has been your favorite for about 2 years now. You sometimes sing along with me with your sweet voice and are so happy to go to bed after I sing to you. If I don't have time to sing, it's hard for you to go to sleep since I've been singing you to sleep ever since you were a baby.
Henry, you really love the gospel of Jesus Christ. You and I read the scriptures every morning together and you know your scripture stories very well. Your teachers in primary tell me that they can tell you have studied at home because you know all the answers to their questions. You have also passed off 9 of the 13 articles of faith that you are supposed to memorize this year. It's easy for you because all I have to do is play the song and you memorize each one in just a few days. You are truly concerned for people who don't believe in Jesus Christ and I know you are gaining an understanding of the importance of living a righteous life. You love your brother that died and all you want is to be together with him and Jesus someday. Just last night as we were looking at your new levitating globe I got you for your Birthday I showed you where China was. You asked me if people in China believed in Jesus and I said that they haven't had the opportunity to know about him, but that you might be able to teach them since you were going to learn Chinese in the Chinese Immersion School next year. You could be called as a missionary to China someday. You got a huge smile on your face and said, "Mom, wouldn't it be cool if I was the first missionary to go into China!?" Then did a little joyous wiggle in your bed. I'm so grateful for your love of the gospel and missionary work.

The thing I love about you the most is your sweet and kind nature. The other day I woke up and you had created me a book called the Magic Mom Book and you had colored for about an hour and put it all together with tape just for me. You are constantly writing me notes that say, "I love you Mom" and I just cherish them with all my heart. Something I will never forget is the way you look when you stand next to me with your arms around me, looking up, and I'm looking down at your beautiful big green eyes, freckled nose, and dimpled cheeks. Your face looks just like an angel and I know you are a special spirit.

Even though we've had our hard years(ages 2.5 to 5.5, phew!), you have turned back into the sweet boy I knew you naturally were. You had a rough first 6 years of life, having a dad who was gone a lot, a mom who was always pregnant, babies who ruled the house, and being forced to move and leave your friends and cousins, but this year your dad will finally have a job and we can soon build a stable existence for you and your sisters. We have had fun dreaming about our dream farm for years, laying awake at night saying what we wanted to have on a farm someday, and hopefully in a few short weeks that will become a reality and you can have your chickens and collect the eggs like you've always wanted. I promise to someday build you a tree house just like the Magic Treehouse books and fill it with books for you to read. All I want to do is make a wonderful life for you. I love you so much my dear, sweet son. Thank you for all you are and for who you have become. Happy Birthday

Love,
It snowed a decent amount this past weekend and as I drove past our local park I noticed about 1000 kids sledding down a really great hill and wished I were doing it as well. I actually had a ski date with Henry that day so I vowed to go sledding as soon as I could get to Wal Mart to buy some inner tubes without having to drag all the kids with me, which just happened to be last night. I spent at least an hour blowing up the tubes interspersed with dizzy spells and we headed out this morning to sled with Ella and Avery. When I stepped outside I noticed that I was hot in just my shirt and then looked around and saw that there was no snow left on our front lawn. I drove to the park and there was about 1/4 inch of slush on the ground left to sled on. No matter how hard I pushed the tubes, they would slowly slide down. Perfect for the little kids, I guess, but after about 10 minutes Henry said, "mom, I'm bored." I was too, my thrill seeking, speed skiing son. The kids found it more fun to wade around in the swampy cesspool smelling pond at the bottom of the hill and after getting thoroughly soaked, decided to head up to the park where they had plenty of fun and didn't get bored at all playing in the balmy 59 degree weather. This is the only time in the past 10 years I wish it were cold and snowy and it's warm and sunny every day. Go figure.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6111514268138816537.post-37299985672335203502012-02-18T23:26:00.000-08:002012-02-18T23:26:28.509-08:00Revised Pledge of AllegianceToday I asked Henry if he knows the Pledge of Allegiance and he told me he says it every day at school. He was doing legos so he wasn't really focusing on what he was saying, but he started to recite it and this is what came out of his mouth: "I pledge allegiance to the flag of the united mates of hysteria..." and then he got the rest right. I feel like that pretty much explains the state we live in. Henry and his sisters are the United Mates of Hysteria. Way to go Henry.
This year, Valentine's Day was kind of significant for Henry. So, we've had our ups and downs with Henry ever since he was about 2 and a half and just recently we've seen him mature so much. He has finally grown out of the really difficult phase he has been in for so many years and has turned back into the happy, delightful boy I knew was under that emotional exterior. At one point I even thought he had ADHD but after seeing him spending an hour and a half writing out his classmates names on his Valentine's cards and focusing on many other projects, including reading chapter books, building legos, and drawing intricate pictures and coloring them, I came to the conclusion that he does not have ADHD but just has tons of energy, which is what I expected all along.
This past Saturday I spoke to Henry's ski school instructor and he is improving leaps and bounds. He's already in the advanced class and now is going off jumps, skiing on his edges and doesn't use the "pizza" anymore to stop but uses "french fries". haha. He's getting so good! It's just so amazing to see my little baby boy accomplishing so much. I am swelling with joy just watching him read, swim, ski, rock climb all the way to the top of the wall, sing, play his little guitar, memorize the Articles of Faith and be such a good kid. At his class today one of the aides said he was a stickler for the rules. He really loves those rules!
We've been having so much fun together lately and he tells me he loves me all the time and it just melts my heart. The other night I drove separately to the gym and when I was leaving, Henry yelled through the window, "Mom, can I come around to your side to give you a kiss?" Of course you can sweet boy.

He made me a Valentine the other day and was trying to hide it and when he realized that I accidentally saw it, he was devastated. He is such a thoughtful boy. I just can't say enough good things about him. I am so looking forward to spending more time teaching him and getting to know him.
For Valentine's Day I actually pulled myself together and made a couple batches of cookies, decorated them and delivered them to our friends and neighbors. What I made used up so much dough that I couldn't deliver them to even half of the people I wanted to, but I at least thanked people who had helped me after the baby. Henry and Bea helped me make the dough, cut out the hearts and I decorated them and we all went around to deliver them. I used my grandmother's delicious recipe and everyone has been asking me for the recipe. I'll post it on my neglected food blog hohlfoods soon.
